At the crossroads of medical and political anthropology, Karine Vanthuyne's research focuses on memory, identity and Indigenous rights advocacy. In Guatemala, she has examined how the Chuj are engaging with genocide court cases coordinated by a human rights organization. In Canada, she examined how the Crees of Eeyou Istchee remember forced residential schooling in the context of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s work. In collaboration with Indigenous leaders and other researchers, she is now documenting how the colonial history and decolonization processes of the Guatemalan Mam and of the Crees are differently encoding their practices of engagement with, or opposition to, mining projects from the same company. As part of this projet, special attention is paid to the methodologies to be employed in order to encourage a truly participatory research.
